Glycogen
Glycogen is a carbohydrate. The so-called animal starch (cf. plant starch) is a highly branched water soluble large molecule (macromolecule) made up of glucose subunits. It is the short term storage form of glucose when there is more glucose than necessary in the body. Ca. 150 g of glycogen are stored in the liver and ca. 300 g in the muscles. The main role of liver glycogen is to regulate blood sugar concentration; muscle glyogen is an energy reserve. Glycogen is broken down by glycogenolysis.
