Antigen
An antigen is a substance which is recognised as foreign by an organism and which evokes a specific immune response, with the formation of antibodies, where the word "specific" means that the response is only against this antigen. Bacteria, viruses, other microorganisms and foreign proteins can all act as antigens. Cf. Influenza virus.
