HIV
Abbreviation of the English term, “human immunodeficiency virus”. A virus from the group of the retroviruses. A distinction is made between HIV-1 and HIV-2. The latter occurs mostly in East Africa. The virus infects cells of the immune system such as T-helper cells and others, which normally provide defence against infective agents and which annihilate body cells with abnormal changes and leads to the destruction of these cells. HIV remains permanently in the macrophages.
